A Complete 3-Day Travel Guide for a Summer Trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon

This is my 3-day weekend itinerary for exploring Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock. If you are looking for a fun summer road trip, I can’t recommend Cannon Beach, Oregon enough.

Cannon Beach is a picturesque sleepy beach town on the coast of Oregon and features Haystack Rock, which is the third-tallest rock formation in the world.

FUN FACT: Twilight, Point Break, and The Goonies were all filmed in and around Astoria and Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Getting to Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach is located on the coast of Oregon in the Pacific Northwest. The closest city to Cannon Beach is Portland, which is about a 2-hours drive.

Seattle also makes for a great launching point for a road trip adventure. Drive time from Seattle is only 3.5 hours to Cannon Beach.

Where To Stay In Cannon Beach

There are quite a few options when it comes to lodging near Cannon Beach depending on your budget. Cannon Beach is home to some adorable Airbnbs and hotels right by the beach.  One thing to note is that almost all hotels and Airbnbs have two-night minimums, especially during the peak summer season, so this guide is focused on a two-night stay.

It can be pretty pricey to stay at a hotel or Airbnb in Cannon Beach. I would recommend looking at these other areas further along the Oregon coast to find more cost-efficient options:

  • Seaside
  • Cannon Beach
  • Manzanita
  • Rockaway Beach

If Airbnb is not within your budget, camping is always an option for a weekend away. The Oregon coast has plenty of camping grounds and easy-to-reserve options.

I stayed at a quaint Airbnb in Rockaway Beach, a very peaceful, sleepy beach town that is 30 mins south of Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach proper can get a bit crowded so this was a nice option to come home to after a long day out exploring.

Best Places To Eat in Cannon Beach

This sleepy town has a lot of delicious food options during your visit. We got delicious crepes at Neptune Crepes which we ate as we strolled along the main downtown and explored the local shops.

Here is a list of fun restaurants to try during your visits:

  • Driftwood Restaurant
  • Public Coast Brewing
  • Mo’s
  • Lazy Susan Cafe
  • Bistro
  • SurfBird

Things To Do / Hikes To Try

One of the best parts of visiting the Oregon Coast is the hiking and amazing views of the coastline.

Here are a few hikes I recommend trying that provided beautiful views along the coast:

  • Ecola Point to Crescent Beach
  • Clatsop Loop Trail
  • Cape Falcon Trail
  • Short Sand Beach to Devil’s Cauldron
  • Neahkahnie Mountain Trail

Hiking tip: Use AllTrails to help research hikes and see the most recent trail conditions.

Make sure to bring warm layers, sunglasses, sunblock, and a water bottle on your hikes. Weather on the coast can change rapidly and it’s best to be prepared!
