March is Women’s Month and yesterday was March 8th, International Women’s Day.
Empowering and providing resources for women is a big part of my mission and the content I create on my blog. I feature interviews with female entrepreneurs and I provided career advice and tips for negotiating a raise for your job!
PROMOTING WOMEN RUN BUSINESSES
Women-owned businesses in the U.S. employ almost nine million people and generate more than $1.6 trillion in revenue, according to 2018 SCORE data.
Women also typically invest up to 90% of their income back into their families and communities, the World Economic Forum finds, so supporting women-owned businesses will benefit communities. I love sharing women’s stories to help inspire. So this month put your money towards female-owned business!
EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN
But its also important to recognize the work we still need to do to do get equal representation and legislation for women.
One big example of that is the Equal Rights Amendment, which would make discrimination based on sex unconstitutional. The Equal Rights Amendment has only passed in 38 of the 50 states in the US.
Women make up less than 25% across the House and Senate in the United States. We need women in business and government to help shape public policy and core issues (equal pay, maternity leave, etc) that pertain to women’s medical and civil rights.
Here are 5 ways to help support local women in business and local legislation geared towards equal rights for women.
HOW TO SUPPORT WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S MONTH
Save a few of these tools and list below! This will help you find a female-owned business to help support this month and in the future:
♦ Contact your Senator and let them know you support the passing for the Equal Rights Amendment! Request their support and ask them to bring it for a vote! Check your State: HERE!
♦ Yelp features the ability for you to search and sort by ‘Women-Owned Business‘. it launched this feature last year in partnership with Rebecca Minkoff and this year has updated its features! See their full list: HERE!
♦ Support & celebrate women writers and authors by buying their books and promoting their storytelling. Here are a few of my favorite female-authored books. Amazon also features their best selling female writers list if you need a little inspiration.
♦ In honor of IWD Netflix has partnered with the UN Women to create “Because She Watched” a special collection of films, series, and documentaries that tells women stories.
♦ Hulu also released its documentary titled: Hillary. This documentary is about Hilary Clinton and features footage from her 2016 presidential run, but it’s also a look into the feminist movement for female politicians.
