5 tips on dressing for fall

over the knee boots green dress

I am sharing my 5 tips for dressing for Fall weather today! If you follow me on Instagram, @whit_wanders, you know it snowed in Seattle this weekend. I was not prepared for that type of cold. San Francisco was always cold and windy – but this is a different type of cold. This is the type of cold you feel in your bones! Dressing cute in the cold is always a challenge. I thought this would be a good time to share my top 5 tips for dressing for colder weather. Share your tips below as I need them now that I am in the Pacific Northwest!

1. Become a Layering Pro

Layering is the best way to ensure you are comfortable outside. I became a layering pro when I lived in San Francisco. You have to start with your base layer and build from there. I tend to gravitate towards thin layers rather than thick layers as I always get hot walking. With this look, I started with my dress and then layered on a long topcoat over it. As it gets colder I will add scarves, hats, gloves etc. (example of layering).

2. Let Your Boots Do The Walking

As Instagram has shown, over-the-knee boots are all the rage. I love them because they are so versatile. They can be worn with dresses or over jeans. I am also a believer in dressing according to proportions. If you are going to be showing a bit of thigh with your OTK boots – compensate with a high neckline or longer sleeves. As the weather gets cooler I will throw these OTK boots on over jeans and add a cozy sweater and moto jacket (example here).

3. Scarves and Hats are your best friends

Sometimes it’s the accessory that really makes the outfit. You can really change up a look or add to it with a simple hat (example here) or scarf (example here).  The added benefit is that they both keep you warm and are easy to take off.

4.  Add Tights

When the weather gets really cold I like to wear tights or leggings under my jeans. This additional layer just helps keep you insulated. It’s also a great fashion statement. You can go bold with colorful tights or ones with fun prints (example here) to add a bit of style and your own twist.

5. Invest in Jackets

While a good jacket can be expensive it’s often worth the investment. I splurged on this Burberry raincoat (example here) and it becomes a staple piece in my wardrobe. A good jacket is key to ensure you are kept warm and dry during the winter.
